Cole Palmer scored four goals in one game to become the league's leading scorer

Cole Palmer (22, Chelsea) scored four goals in one game to become the league's leading scorer.

Chelsea defeated Everton 6-0 in the 33rd round of the 2023-2024 Premier League (PL) season at Stamford Bridge in London, England, on Saturday (Sept. 16).

The win extends Chelsea's unbeaten run in the league to eight games (W4 D4 L4) and puts them in ninth place with 47 points. With one game in hand, the Blues remain within striking distance of sixth-place Newcastle United and seventh-place Manchester United (both on 50+ points), who have played one more game, and remain in contention for a European spot next season. Everton remained in 16th place, just above the relegation zone, with 27 points.

Chelsea started in a 4-2-3-1 formation. Nicolas Jackson, Mikhail Mudrikh, Cole Palmer, Noni Madueke, Conor Gallagher, Moises Caicedo, Marc Cucurella, Thiago Silva, Trevor Chalobah, Malo Guisto, and Jorginho started.

Everton opted for a 4-4-1-1 formation. Beto, Abdoulaye Doucoure, Dwight McNeill, James Garner, Amadou Onana, Ashley Young, Vitali Mikolenko, Jared Branswaite, James Tarkowski, Seamus Coleman, and Jordan Pickford started up front.

Everton missed a perfect opportunity. In the 10th minute, they broke the ball up front with a counter-attack and Seaman, who had dug in on the right side of the box, crossed in front of goal. It was a cross that was cleverly placed between the defense and the keeper, but the ball hit Beto's foot and sailed high.

After surviving the scare, Chelsea took the lead. In the 13th minute, Palmer beat the defense on a solo run before playing a one-two with Jackson, who fired a precise left-footed shot from the front of the arc into the corner of the net. He became the first player in Chelsea history to score a goal in seven consecutive home games (in league play).

Palmer made it a multi-goal game. In the 18th minute, Gallagher broke down the left side of the box and played a cutback pass. Jackson's shot was saved by the keeper, but Palmer was there to head home the rebound.

Palmer completed his hat trick just moments later. In the 29th minute, Pickford stepped outside the box and played a short pass to Palmer, who cut it off and then rose high to slot the ball into an empty net.

Chelsea's scoring streak continued. In the 44th minute, Kukurela sent in a high cross from the left flank. Jackson got a nice touch on it before spinning around and firing a volley that rattled the net past Pickford.

Everton made several substitutions in the second half, including Nathan Paterson, Andre Gomes, Jack Harrison, and Michael Keane, but to no avail. Instead, they conceded a penalty to Madueke in the 16th minute. The Chelsea players argued over who should take the spot kick, but in the end, Palmer calmly finished for his fourth goal.

Palmer reached the 20-goal plateau in the league, tying him with Elling Holland (Manchester City) for the top spot on the list. He quickly added seven more goals to his tally with a hat-trick against Man Utd and a pot against Everton, making him a strong candidate for the top scorer's award. The goal fireworks were set off by Alfie Gilchrist's debut goal in second-half stoppage time to complete the 6-0 win.
