Arsenal accelerate work to sign MF 17 billion
Arsenal are looking to bolster their midfield.
“Arsenal and Manchester City are seriously considering a move for Bruno Guimaraes (26, Newcastle) ahead of this summer's transfer window,” British outlet Tribal Football reported on Thursday.
Arsenal are one of the favorites to win the Premier League this season. After 34 games in the league, they are currently in a tight race at the top of the table with 77 points from 24 wins, five draws, and five losses.
A solid midfield has been a driving force for Arsenal. Martin Ødegaard, 25, has been a key part of the team's rise, working seamlessly with Declan Rice, 25, who joined last summer.
It's not as if they don't need any more midfield reinforcements. With the future of Jorginho (32) and Thomas Partey (30) unclear this summer, a replacement is needed to fill the void.
Guimarães has been on Arsenal's shortlist of targets. According to reports, the Gunners are facing stiff competition from Man City and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) for his signature this summer.
Guimarães is considered one of the best midfielders in the Premier League. Since joining Newcastle in 2022, he has turned heads around the world with his wide vision and accurate kicking.
He has already established himself as an integral part of Newcastle's core. With four goals and eight assists in 44 games across all competitions this season, he is considered an indispensable part of the Magpies' team.
He is also making his mark with the Brazilian national team. A member of the Brazilian national team since 2020, Guimarães played 79 minutes in last month's friendly against England.
Arsenal's interest in Guimarães is serious. “Arsenal, who have a number of Brazilian players such as Gabriel Jesus (27), Gabriel Martinelli (22) and Gabriel Magalhaes (26), believe Guimarães would fit in well with their squad,” according to Tribal Football.
The signing is not guaranteed. Newcastle are reportedly keen to build next season's squad around Guimarães despite their financial difficulties.
The player himself is not keen on a move. Guimarães is happy in Newcastle and is reportedly looking for a new home outside of the city with his wife and two children.
