What is a Weed Mat and How Does It Work in Gardening?

A weed mat (also known as landscape fabric or weed control fabric) is a specially designed gardening material used to prevent unwanted weeds from growing in soil while still allowing water and air to pass through. It is typically made from woven or non-woven polypropylene or other durable synthetic fibers that create a breathable but protective barrier.

The primary function of a weed mat is to block sunlight from reaching the soil surface. Since most weeds require sunlight to germinate and grow, limiting their exposure significantly reduces weed growth. When properly installed, the mat is laid directly over the soil and secured with landscape pins or staples. Small holes or slits are then cut into the fabric where plants, flowers, or shrubs will grow. This allows cultivated plants to receive the necessary nutrients and water while suppressing invasive weeds around them.
