Why does my phone say SOS only instead of showing network bars?

If you’re moving through rural areas or places with lots of interference (like mountains or thick buildings), you’ll likely see that icon. To answer why is my phone in SOS mode, it basically means "I can't find your specific network, but I can see other networks nearby for emergency calls." Your phone is essentially on standby for 911 calls only. Once you get back into a high-coverage area, it should switch back to 5G or LTE automatically. If not, a quick restart usually clears it up.
